Summer

Summer's happened. It's now the Fall.

Dustin and I both had great summers separately... but it's more than wonderful sharing the same days again. Here are some images of Bogoslof, Dustin's summer and...finally our September together.
First, see pictures of Dustin's trip to North Dakota.

Mom mustered the courage to venture up this 4 percent slope -- an uncommon hill in the Red River Valley.

Along the Red River.

A few miles west of Dad's house, looking north into Grand Forks County, from the county line.

Next, Anchorage...

The Anchorage summer garden with the CampFire kids...it grew!

Fishing on the Talkeetna River, in July.

Then, in September, we were together again.

First Year wedding anniversary, celebrated at a distance in August, and on the wedding beach in September. Resaid our vows, lit the wedding candle. Full of thanks for our amazing family, friends and our first year of marriage together.

I came home from Bogoslof on September 3, and took three whole weeks off work.... fantastic time to hike, pick berries, can fruit, garden, and catch up with friends. A real treat to have time at home and take a pause from work.

Snow has arrived in the Chugach...

Dustin and I went to Seldovia for a week. Took bikes on the ferry, camped at Outside Beach for a few days, then biked up to Red Mountain. Met some great people in Seldovia, fantastic wildlife, and ocean and mountain time together.

We hauled our camping gear in a trailer.

Red Mountain

The sun came up and camp dried out

Summer turned to Autumn to winter, with wet slushy snow up near the old chromite mine at Red Mountain

Lots of great high bush blueberries.

Wet, snowy camping...

Beautiful Seldovia

I was happy to be home for the Camp Fire Spud harvest with Dustin and Sarah B. The kids were soo excited... and went home with bags of potatoes, muddy clothes and big smiles

Spuds!

Harvest time! Rosehips, berries, crisp air. Been making lots of jams and syrups... and hope to share some under the name Puffin Preserves. Ram has drawn a beautiful tufted puffin for the label.

Our potatoes at home

It was the year of Fava/Broad beans. We have a freezer full

And, crazy large swedes (being enjoyed by Bev's chickens!)

I spent 2.5 months on Bogoslof, a very small island north of the Aleutian Chain in the Bering Sea. Incredible island covered in thousands of fur seals and seabirds. The team of 6 conducted both seal and seabird studies... examining where everyone was feeding and what they were foraging on. Lots of high tech logger work... and technical challenges. But, a great team and good field season. Fur seals still terrify me, but it was fun to learn more about marine mammals from the fur seal team. All slightly surreal now.. 6 people on an island less than 1km long and where most of land cannot be disturbed because of the native inhabitants -- fur seals. It was a challenging adventure.

The Iron Box, or Fred Flinstone Mobile... fur seal team in action. They creep up to the seals in this box and capture individuals to deploy loggers that record where individuals are feeding and how deep they are diving

Tufted Puffins rule the bird kingdom on Bogoslof. This is the view from puffin slope looking down at the most recent volcanic dome with the weatherport and cabins in the foreground

Fur seals dominate the beaches..

Fall and early Winter

Our landing home after fish-camp was full, and we all had travel plans.  A little too much travel, but each was rich and important.  Peter ...
