Vera and I hiked up to Crater Lake the first summer we met, and Peter and Calvin were close to being 1yr old.
The hike took hours.. with heavy babies and gear. It was the first big hike we did solo with our kids, and it felt a huge venture for us. We've done the same hike together each summer since. Each year has been unique- The boys have gone through different stages of speed and independence. We've had a couple of epic hikes, where, after 9hrs, we've called the dads to meet us on the way home to help carry the boys. We hiked one year when I was pregnant with Leif. We've played in the last patches of alpine snow, swam, fished in lake, seen goats and ptarmigan, and incredible flowers. Some hikes have been in golden weather, some have been in whirling mist. Each trip has been memorable.
Now we have four boys--age 5, 6, 8, and 9, and they can all outrun us! We made it past Crater and up to the antennae together. Such an incredible day together, and we were in awe of the boy's strength, ability, and pure joy of the freedom of being high together.
